On Blogging, Psalms, and Songwriting

For years I have looked askance at blogging as the annoying platform of wanna-be writers. Obviously I have changed my opinion, or I consider myself a wanna-be writer who wants so desperately to write more that I am willing to risk annoying others to do so. You be the judge. Either way, I decided to take the plunge into the world of blogging for 3 simple reasons.

1. I recently read an article by a prolific, popular blogger who said he loved the faithful, plodding bloggers. I figured if someone of his caliber appreciated the average blogger, than maybe I have a chance to make an impact. And if I can do anything more to glorify God better in my life, I ought to. And my previous attitude towards bloggers was arrogant. There, I said it.
2. I have often thought if I do not have anything of value to say, I shouldn’t say anything at all. To my regret, I have not always followed that rule. Apparently a lot of us struggle with that rule. So, I have to ask myself, “What can I say to other people that is valuable and will truly benefit them?” For me, the answer comes in the form of theology and worship. For the last five years I have had the privilege of serving as an assistant pastor and finishing my seminary education, with much of that time spent focusing on music and worship in the church.  I also devoted myself to a book study of the Psalms (more on that in my next post). I want to articulate, refine, and dive more deeply into that study by sharing it with you. I pray it will glorify God and feed your soul (and mine!).
3. I am a songwriter. Just recently I have had more opportunities open up, and I would like to share that music with as many people as possible in the days to come. Joseph Martin says that sacred songwriters must strive for a balance between ministry, artistry, and industry. It’s kind of hard to market your own stuff while looking humble, so I’ve decided to be frank about the whole thing. I write music and pursue publication because I desperately want people to sing these songs and learn the theology that anchors my texts. From my heart to yours, I want this music to introduce you to my incredible God so you can love him and know him. There you have it. You can expect these blogs to focus on a biblical theology of the Psalms, with an application toward everyday life. I hope and pray these few words will help you be like the person who meditates on the law of God.
