In an effort to emphasize the season of Thanksgiving, I encourage you to celebrate it all through the month of November. Earlier I explained my 21 Days of Giving Thanks challenge, which you can read about here. Today let’s give thanks for fruitfulness. Specifically, I mean the fruitful harvest of stuff God has given us.
Day 3 – Give Thanks for Material Abundance
As Christians, we need to realize that God’s Word teaches us how to think about and manage all the stuff in our lives. We enjoy an overabundance of wealth, which heightens our responsibility to steward and use this stuff in a way that pleases God. If you are interested, Albert Mohler has a helpful 9 minute podcast on the theology of stuff. We should definitely take time to thank God for our material abundance.
I can look back over my married life and recount story after story of various things that were given to us. In my experience, the American Christians I know have been very generous with their stuff in our time of need. And I thank God for that. We probably would not have half the stuff we possess were it not for God’s sovereign care in the generosity of his people. So our first response should be thankfulness! Beyond that, though, generosity kills covetousness and greed. Who needs your stuff today?
Challenge: Thank God for the stuff in your life and pray that he would lay one individual on your heart to whom you can show generosity. Then give cheerfully.
