Time to continue my quest to share lyrics that never made it as songs or poems that simply sat in my files. One of my greatest disappointments is when I meet artists with so much they can offer the world, but with little initiative to share it. I am resolving to avoid that error at the risk of committing another equally great error. I may not have much to offer and still share! You can decide, and if what I write is worth taking the time to read, all glory be to Christ.
This lyric I wrote for a song that I recorded with my wife for our church’s Covid service online on Resurrection Sunday 2020. She played the violin obligato, and I played the guitar and sang in front of a computer camera and mic setup in our living room late one night after putting our girls to bed. It is hard to forget those isolating and disorienting days. Where were you on Easter of 2020? These words remind us that no matter what darkness we encounter, even the darkness of Covid, in Christ the darkness cannot stop the dawn. We have hope through our risen Savior of victory over Satan, sin, and death. What a blessed hope!
These words were also one of several lyrics I wrote during a season of meditation on the biblical metaphor of light and darkness. I shared one of these lyrics, “Savior Alight,” last time, and I plan to share another lyric in the future along this same light/darkness theme. ~ CP
Darkness Cannot Stop the Dawn
Vs. 1
Nighttime falls on the holy city.
The cross is bare; the deed is done.
Shadows rise without pause or pity,
Satan sure he has won.
But darkness cannot stop the dawn,
Jesus wins the victory, casting down his enemy.
The Serpent, just a simple pawn,
For darkness cannot stop the dawn.
Vs. 2
Daylight breaks on the holy city.
The tomb is bare, and death undone.
Heaven rings with the sound of vict’ry,
God exalts Christ the Son.
For darkness cannot stop the dawn,
Jesus in his finest hour blossoms like a morning flow’r.
The threat of death forever gone;
For darkness cannot stop the dawn.
Vs. 3
Joy will rise on the holy city,
When we behold the mighty Sun.
Sorrows fade like a distant mem’ry.
On the day Jesus comes.
For darkness cannot stop the dawn;
Jesus turns the night to day, wiping all our tears away.
Ride on, O risen King, ride on;
For darkness cannot stop the dawn.
